Pediatric Dentistry

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is also known as pedodontics or paedodontics in different countries. It is a branch of dentistry which deals with children from birth through adolescence. In India, this specialty of dental science is recognized by the Dental Council of India and is recommended but the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry (ISPPD) for a dental visit in six months after the first tooth or by a child’s first birthday.

The pedodontist must have four years of dental studies along with general practical experience followed by three years of special training in dentistry for infants, children, adolescence, and children with special care needs.

This branch is specifically concerned with the oral health of children in India. The main aim is to improve oral health in children and encourage the highest standards of clinical care. This promotes the initial dental checkups as well as basic treatments for maintaining the good oral health of a child and also educate the parents about any dental conditions present. It is important to establish an inclusive and accessible relationship with the dentist, the patient and, the parents. An early Oral Examination aids in the detection of the early stages of tooth decay and other dental and soft tissue problems. The early detection is very essential to maintain oral health and modify many aberrant habits, as well as get the problems treated in no time. A pediatric dentist mostly prevents the cause before the cure.

In addition, parents are informed about the preventive home care programs such as brushing, flossing, Fluoride Application, indications to measure the sugar intake per day and to reduce it accordingly, diet counselling, a complete caries risk assessment, the information on finger thumb, pacifier habits, advice on preventing injuries to the mouth and specifically on the teeth, and information on their proper growth and development.

The pediatric dentistry is different from any of the other dental specialty as it covers all the aspects of oral health care for children. The treatments done are mostly restorative care including endodontics treatment, prosthetics, minor oral surgical procedures, interceptive Orthodontics.

Some form of this specialty also works closely with pediatricians, surgeons, and anesthetists as part of a team in the overall care of children with complex medical problems. In some special cases, they may work with other agencies such as health visitors and social workers in managing vulnerable children and their relating problems.

Most of the treatments are carried out under topical and local anesthesia children are not always cooperative and due to their behavioral problems, special techniques such as conscious sedation or even general anesthesia are considered during the procedure. The concern for treating children starts with a complete diagnosing of the head and neck from the gums, throat muscles and nervous system of the head, neck, and jaw, the tongue, and salivary glands to find out any lumps, swelling, ulcers, discolouration and other anomalies and care for dental injuries, for example, fractured, displaced, or knocked-out teeth.
