Periodontics

A branch of dental studies and practices that deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gingiva (gums), cementum (envelops the root), periodontal ligaments (ligaments attach the bone and the cementum), and alveolar bone (the underlying bone structure). It provides information in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth to a dentist and dental hygienists. It also focuses on the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth.

Periodontics is a specialized degree gained after 5 years of general dental studies and practices. To achieve a degree in periodontology, a dentist must complete 3 years of specialty training and study in diagnosing, preventing and treating soft and hard tissue diseases in the mouth, with extensive teeth care modalities under a recognized college or university.
